GEO vs SEO: What's the Difference?

Generative Engine Optimization and traditional SEO solve different problems. Learn how they complement each other — and why you need both.

Two different battlegrounds

Traditional SEO optimizes for search engine results pages, where users scan a list of links and click. GEO — Generative Engine Optimization — optimizes for AI answer engines, where the model directly recommends businesses and the user may never click anything at all.

What GEO optimizes

GEO focuses on being cited inside AI-generated content: structured data that machines can parse, citations from sources AI models trust, and content written to be retrieved and quoted by language models. Ranking signals like backlinks still matter, but they are inputs to a different output — an answer, not a list.

Do you have to choose?

No. AEO/GEO and traditional SEO are complementary. Your SEO agency handles Google rankings; Click Elevate handles AI citations. Many of our clients run both simultaneously — the businesses that win the next five years of search will be visible in both places.

Which one should you prioritize?

If customers ask recommendation-style questions—such as “best dentist near me” or “who should I hire for this repair?”—both search results and AI-generated answers can influence the decision. Do not abandon SEO for GEO. Build a technically sound, useful site first, then make its facts, services, and proof easy for answer engines to retrieve and cite.
